The Japan Prize Foundation announced Dr. Max D. Cooper as one of the laureates of the 2018 Japan Prize in the field of Medical Science and Medicinal Science.
Dr. Cooper, Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, received the prize, alongside Dr. Jacques Miller, Emeritus Professor at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, Australia, for their studies on “Discovery of B and T lymphocyte lineages and its impact on understanding disease pathology and therapeutic development.”
Dr. Cooper has served as chair of the Advisory Council for the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences (IMS), formerly the RIKEN Center for Allergy and Immunology (RCAI), since 2004.
“The discovery of B cell lineage truly built the foundation for the field of immunology that we continue to work on at IMS. Researchers in IMS felt very excited and honored upon hearing this great news,” says Dr. Tadashi Yamamoto, Director of RIKEN IMS.
