The primary goal of our laboratory is to collaborate with biomedical sci-60entists, patients, the public, and experts in ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) to assess the impact of biomedical sciences on our society and to co-design a conducive environment for these sciences. Specifically, we will focus on ensuring the appropriate use of human-derived materials and information in research and development. We conduct ELSI research from a wide range of per-spectives, including international collaboration, redress of historical injustices, and transparent and responsible research governance. Furthermore, we will gather and disseminate knowledge related to biomedical ethics through consul-tation with researchers who are tackling novel issues as well as by networking with domestic and international research institutions and universities. We examined public attitudes toward embryo model research through a survey of attitudes toward research involving human stem cells or embryos. Respondents included members of the public living in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Approximately 10% of respon-dents in each country disagreed with such research. We are conducting research on the issue of benefit sharing with research participants and communities in life science and medical research. The study focuses on how to ensure the ethical distribution of research benefits to and fostering collaboration with participants and relevant communities as well as broader societies through a feedback mechanism. With the background of collaborating with McGill University in Canada, a Research Associate stayed at the Centre for Genomics and Policy and con-ducted collaborative research. During her stay, she and the PI were also invited to a symposium at the University of Hong Kong. At the symposium, they gave presentations about current situations in Patient Public Involvement/ Engage-ment and genomic research involving Indigenous peoples in Japan.Invited presentationsKaori Muto “Patient Involvement in Research and Access to Benefits” Regulatory Governance of Genomics & Re-productive Technologies (Hong Kong, China) December 2023Momoko Sato “Indigenous Research Ethics Governance in Japan and Its Implications for Genomics” Regulatory Governance of Genomics & Reproductive Technologies (Hong Kong, China) December 2023Kaori Muto. “Translating human genetics and genom-ics into the future: Foresights, hurdles and global co-operation” Human Genetics Asia 2023 (Tokyo, Japan) October 2023Figure: Upopoy Memorial SiteUpopoy is a national center of Ainu history and culture.
