Here are ways to join research programs within RIKEN.

Overview of the Research Opportunities at RIKEN

The following website describes the overview of the research opportunities at RIKEN, from graduate students and postdocs to independent investigators.

Ph.D. Students (affiliated with overseas universities)

Ph.D. students from overseas universities can perform part of their Ph.D. at RIKEN (for 1 to 3 years) as International Program Associate (IPA), provided that the university has entered a partnership program with RIKEN. RIKEN is a research institute (not an educational institute), so you will receive your Ph.D. from your home university (this means your supervisor and thesis committee are okay with you joining this program). The program covers airfare and living expenses.

I have served as a sub-tutor (people who make sure students are doing okay) for international students in IPA within RIKEN IMS, and all of them have enjoyed their experiences both at RIKEN and also in Japan.

Ph.D. Students (affiliated with Japanese universities)

Graduate students from overseas, who are enrolled at Japanese universities (M.S., Ph.D. programs), can also perform research under RSR and JRA programs.

Postdocs

RIKEN offers Special Postdoctoral Researcher (SPDR) position for qualified postdocs, which covers salary, travel cost, and research budget to pursue their own research goals. There are many researchers from overseas at RIKEN and the official language at RIKEN is English. This means that official announcements, correspondences, lab meetings, and seminars are all conducted in English. Laboratory assistants are also bilingual in most cases. Of course, once you step outside, the official language is Japanese (with Google Translate, things are not as bad as it used to be).

You can also use JSPS Postdoctoral Researcher Program to conduct postdoc research at RIKEN.
